By Susan hines WheN It coMes to high-profile public projects, DBIA best practices tend to focus on the relationships among team members and the relationship between the owner and design-builder. But best practices are ultimately meant to provide owners and end users with facilities that meet or exceed their expectations. When the project is an airport, the end users can be elusive, to say the least. So it is up to the owner, via the request for proposal (RFP), and the design-build team to carefully and creatively anticipate the needs of travelers. In the case of the massive Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport Terminal Area Improvement (SJC) in California, the social media site Yelp.com provides a window on the end user perspective before, during and after project completion. Given the Silicon Valley location, perhaps this is to be expected, but even Mellanie D. started her yelp with “Whaaaat?!?!?! Reviewing an airport? hehehe...” Yet that Yelper, along with 340 other reviewers, rated the airport four stars or higher.
