I had small solar-powered gadgets and used recycled pellets in a wood-burning stove to keep warm in the winter. There was no running water or electricity in the community, but I was lucky in that I was able to use the facilities at the university when needed. 'It was wonderful to live so close to nature. I built a covered platform to practise yoga outside, and named the car "Pantalaimon" [the name of Lyra's dæmon in the Philip Pullman trilogy His Dark Materials]. I even "baptised" it!
