around the harbor. Often, we paddleboard up to the harbor entrance
and get out at the Rudder Room.
There are often a number of dogs
there for her to visit. It's one of the
very few bars where you can actually sit on the beach.

Dog Days

As one of sunny California's most dog-friendly cities, Oxnard
welcomes your four-legged friends. Here's how one popular
resident, Olive the Saint Bernard, turns her rounds about
town into a canine's endless summer.
All dogs love the beach. Even the Saint Bernard, a breed that hails from the

snowy Swiss Alps, can feel right at home in Oxnard. Just ask Abigail Convery, owner of five-year-old Olive. As soon as she and her husband adopted Olive as a puppy
from Sunny Saints St. Bernard Rescue, they quickly introduced their new family
member to the coast life and began training her for together time on the water. On
the first visit, Olive was afraid of the ocean. Second time around, she went with a
neighbor's puppy already acclimated to the water - and took to it quickly. "She
decided that if it was ok for her friend - she had nothing to worry about," says
Convery. Coaxed slowly with the encouragement of "lots of hot dogs," she learned
to ride the waves on a board. If you happen to be sailing, paddle boarding or strolling at the harbor, you just might run into Olive, now a seaside regular and possibly
Oxnard's leader of the surf pack. O

4. At Oxnard Beach Park, Olive's
mom and dad can open up a
bottle of wine to watch the sunset
and light reflecting on the dunes.
5. We enjoy going to outdoor concerts and watch live bands every
Saturday afternoon during the
summer at Concerts by the Sea.

SILVERSTRAND
BEACH is the second
best for us after HOLLYWOOD BEACH
because we avoid
disturbing Oxnard's
special shorebird
population, particularly during the nesting season (March 1
- September 15).
The Rules: Leashed
dogs are welcome
on the beach before
9:00 a.m. and after
5:00 p.m."

3. We really enjoy walking around
the Channel Islands Harbor. There
are great shops near Seabridge
where Olive can get an ice cream
and fantastic paths that have exercise stations.
