2017 ANNUAL MEETING & EXPO PREVIEW
APTF to Award Record Amount of Scholarship Funds
T
he American Public Transportation Foundation (APTF) Board
of Directors will award $145,000
in scholarship funds-a record amount
of funds dispersed-to 28 students and
public transit professionals
at a special ceremony on
Tuesday afternoon during
the Annual Meeting.
These funds bring the
total amount of scholarship money awarded since
the foundation's 1988
inception to more than
$1 million.
APTF will also award one new named
scholarship for the first time: the James
"Jim" Cowen Scholarship, which was
fully funded in 2016.
This scholarship was created in memory of APTA Hall of Fame member Jim
Cowen, who served as general manager
and chief executive officer of TriMet in
Portland, OR, and The Bus in Honolulu.
The APTF board also selected recipi-
ents of this year's new single-year scholarships, which are unique for the foundation because they are non-endowed,
titled scholarships created and awarded
in the same year.
The six scholarships to
be awarded this year are
the Dora M. Boswell and
John K. Reimer Scholarship,
the Mineta Transportation
Institute/American Public
Transportation Foundation
Joint Scholarship, three
Leadership APTA Class of
2017 Scholarships and the
Cubic Transportation Systems Inc. Scholarship. Passenger Transport will announce
the 2017 scholarship winners in the
Oct. 9 issue.
Fundraiser, Reception
In related news, APTF will conduct a
fundraiser and chair's reception during
the Annual Meeting, Sunday Oct 8,
8-11 p.m. at Ventanas in Atlanta.

Help Others 'Dress for Success'
By Donating 'Gently Used'
Business Clothing at EXPO
APTA IS JOINING the Atlanta Chapter of WTS to collect donated office
clothing in a "Dress for Success" event during the Annual Meeting & EXPO.
Volunteers will be standing by to take donations Oct. 7-8 at both the Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC) and the Marriott Marquis, and then at
GWCC Oct. 9-11. Women's clothing will be donated to Dress for Success and
men's clothing to Goodwill of North Georgia.
Dress for Success provided donation guidelines for women's work clothing,
which must be freshly dry-cleaned, laundered and ironed:
n Interview-appropriate suits and blouses;
n Professional separates including blouses, slacks, skirts, dresses, blazers and
jackets;
n Work-appropriate shoes, specifically with closed toes, and hosiery;
n Jewelry and scarves; and
n Briefcases, portfolios or work-appropriate handbags, specifically in black.
Goodwill of North Georgia accepts all clothing items in good, used condition. The organization has used its donated goods business for more than 90
years to fund job training programs and employment services for people who
are having a hard time finding work, people with disabilities, veterans and
youth. Last year alone, Goodwill helped more than 24,000 men and women
find jobs with more than 4,000 area employers, including the Metropolitan
Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority.
In addition to the on-site collection event, APTA encourages participating
agencies and businesses to conduct their own clothing drives and ship the
items to Atlanta for donation.
