Wintres Woma
English-born, Chicago-based
Elkington joins guitarists Steve
Gunn and Glenn Jones in
offering a refreshing take on
acoustic-based music. Elkington's playing - based in American Primitive and traditional folk
forms - is warm and inviting.
But what helps this album
truly hit its mark is his pleasing
baritone (think Mark Kozelek)
and tastefully minimal accompaniment (piano, light percussion,

FOREIGNER

CHUCK BERRY

Chuck
It was to be Berry's 90th
birthday present to the world,
but he died just before its
release. The album rocks in
classic Chuck style, blending
double-stop riffs with R&B
soul and some more introspective numbers. - MD

It's fun to trash Foreigner,
but you have to hand it to
leader Mick Jones - the guy
could write a six-string hook
with laser-guided precision.
This 40-track box has all the
rockin' hits: "Hot Blooded,"
"Double Vision," and "Jukebox
Hero," along with new and rare
tracks. Sure, Jones was no
flash on guitar, but his studio
tone was massive and fierce.
Gotta give him his due. - PP

This Is Steve
Songwriter and multiinstrumentalist Steve Marion
leads his bands through a
wide-ranging array of song
styles, from surf and '70s pop
to African rhythms and hardcharging modern rock. His third
album is inspired and fun, pure
ear candy with plenty of catchy
guitar riffs as floss. - MD

East West Time Line
To some, Eubanks will always
be the former "Tonight Show"
band leader, but as past releases
and his newest prove, he's a
monster jazz guitarist who is a
fine player and composer. This
one features five of his compositions and five standards. He and
the band shine on pretty much

and tells many a great story of

The Psalms
Jessie Colter has been
deeply religious since before
her days as part of the Outlaw
movement with husband Waylon Jennings. In the '90s, when
guitarist Lenny Kaye helped
Waylon write his autobiography, he heard her singing the
Psalms at the piano, improvising melodies. He captured
12 Psalms on record, adding
spare minimalist accompaniment including his guitar and
occasional pedal steel. - RK
