FIRST LAP
Thanks for Peter Stuart Kohman's excellent feature on Gibson lap
steels ("The Way Back Beat," June '17). I have played guitar for 45
years and enjoyed owning Strats, Teles, Les Pauls, and an SG. Ten years
ago, while searching for "my next guitar," I bought a Rickenbacker
lap-steel - my first - and it introduced me to different chapters in
the history of guitars and amplification. I soon began collecting lapsteels and matching amps, which are available, affordable, and easy
to carry. Thankfully, most people do not appreciate the rarity of a
Gibson E-150!

SHOW NOTE
I attended the Amigos' guitar show in Villa
Park, Illinois, on May 20 looking to sell my
late husband's '61 Gibson ES-345TD. At the
show, I was approached by a man who said
he knew some of the policemen my husband
worked with before he died 15 years ago. He asked
to see the guitar and offered $12,000, but did not have the money with
him. I trusted him to follow through, but he called a few days later and
said he wasn't going to buy the guitar, then hung up on me.
I learned to always work with dealers at a show. In my case, they
were very nice and had offered the same for the guitar. So, I'll hold
on to it until the next show, and talk to a dealer.
