grippers. One gripper holds the wall while
another slides into the next position, allowing the device to move much as an
inch worm moves down a tree leaf," he
outlines.
The tool's size varies widely as the
grippers expand and retract, Moore says.
"Today, we can go from 3.5 inches to 12
or more inches," he details. "That lets us
use the tractor in holes with a large diameter, but with completion equipment
that creates restrictions, a prime example
of which is gas wells in the Middle East."
The tool's Transformer-like flexibility
also may be a boon in offshore wells,
Moore continues. "We are looking at
going through extremely small subsea
completions and then getting into moderately sized holes. In other words, we
want to be able to go from two inches to
six or seven inches reliably," he says.
The WWT CT Tractor could enable
offshore operators to clean flowlines that
otherwise would be abandoned, Moore
adds. "Because of obstructions in certain
flowlines, solvent slugs and pigs may
not be enough to clean them. We believe

we can use the tractor to take clean-out
tools into these flowlines and deliver the
force necessary to break up obstructions,
even on flowlines that are many miles in
length."
WWT is researching ways to help frac
plug mill-out tools reach bottom in particularly long laterals, a task Moore says
will require increasing the tractor's capacity.
"We have proven two ways to do that," he
reports. "One is to put multiple pistons on
the shafts that are the backbones of our
tool so it can pull with more force. The
other is to put two tractors together, which
requires more space, but greatly increases
capacity. Combining tractors has worked
well in the lab, and we are looking forward
to trying it in the field."
