DBIA at 20: Established, Mature
and Leading the Industry Toward
an Increasingly Integrated Future
sitting in dbia’s reCently renovated
office space on Washington, D.C.’s Pennsylvania
Avenue, it is amazing to think that our organization began just 20 years ago. When DBIA’s
founding members met in the nation’s capital in
February 1993, they were truly starting something new—an association of A/E/C professionals
devoted to improving the entire industry, rather
than merely protecting the interests of a specific
group of practitioners. Integration was our foundation then, as it is now.
If you have been following the weekly installments covering DBI A’s histor y feat ured in
Design-Build Insight over the last several months,
you already know something about DBIA’s early
years. When I read DBIA founding chairman
Preston Haskell’s description of how DBIA collaborated with the American Institute of Architects,
Associated General Contractors, the American
Society of Civil Engineers and other organizations to promote changes to Federal Acquisition
Requisition requirements and allow all federal
agencies to engage in design-build, I was struck
by the similarity between those early efforts and
DBIA’s current work with industry associations.
While the creation of an institute devoted to a
delivery method rather than specific discipline was
a new idea at the time, the necessity for collaboration to effect change has remained a constant.
We must collaborate within DBIA and across
the industry. As the fastest-growing delivery
method today, design-build is ascendant, and
both the industry and owners look to DBIA for
guidance in the best practices and contracting
methodology that help ensure project success.
In the winter 2012 issue of DBIA’s IQ, I shared
the association’s three-year strategic plan, which
dbia.org
reaffi rms DBIA’s commitment to, and advocacy
of, “Design-Build Done Right” across public and
private market sectors and within project teams.
As we make great strides in the use of designbuild and the acceptance of DBIA best practices
by owners, ensuring that the teams charged
with delivery operate in truly integrated fashion is imperative. Realizing the full potential
of design-build ultimately rests on every team’s
commit ment to Desig n-Build Done R ight.
Moreover, it is DBIA’s responsibility to ensure
that our members have the products and services
they need to perform design-build at its best.
To that end, we have reached out to renowned
industr y experts to dramatically strengthen
DBIA’s reach. A revamped committee structure
addresses specific market sectors, working groups
provide resources, and forums engage the two
audiences that are key to the continued growth
of design-build. These committees, working
groups and forums will work collaboratively
across formal lines, rather than maintaining traditional “committee” silos. They are as follows:
• Committees: Legislative/Legal, Innovation,
Federal Market, Water/Wastewater Markets,
Transportation Markets, Student/Academia
Outreach, and Membership
• Working Groups: Education/Best Practices,
To ol s & Re sou rce s a nd Projec t / Tea m
Performance Guidelines
• Forums: Owners’ Council and Designers’
Council
Visit dbia.org to learn more about DBIA’s
impressive list of thought leaders in these areas,
and to see the short- and long-term goals of each
of these groups.
