REAL WEDDINGS Jumping over the broom is a tradition tied to Kendrick’s African American culture, which the couple worked to incorporate into the ceremony. Charil’s Filipino culture was presented through sponsors – several other couples to whom the couple look for guidance in their marriage, like godparents – and multiple Filipino marriage ceremonies. The reception that followed was more of a night-long concert than a wedding reception. Charil and Kendrick cast a lineup of dancers and singers so that guests would never be without something to watch. “I’m very blessed to have a family that’s very talented, so all the performers who were at our wedding were family members,” Charil says. Probably the most noteworthy act was her cousins’ hip-hop dance group Funky Fresh, whose performance ended with him blowing her kisses as they cleared the floor. “We were able to have people perform for us who really loved and cared for us. We wanted to make sure that everybody was involved, even the people who helped us out as vendors were all good friends or family,” Kendrick says. For the father-daughter dance, Charil pre-recorded a song that she dedicated to her father, which played as she danced with him. In the middle of the song, she gave a speech thanking him for all he had done for her. Even with a lineup of performers, this outgoing couple never escaped the crowd’s attention. The balance between their loved ones’ dedications and their own jokes really enforced their popularity. This wedding was definitely one to see, and they made sure everyone they loved was seen in it.
