Reduced readmissions, fewer medical mishaps
and duplicative tests, and higher patient
satisfaction—hospitals and health systems
have been working diligently to achieve these
goals, and more are using health information
exchanges to succeed.
The number of hospitals participating in an HIE organization has doubled in
recent years, according to data from HIMSS Analytics, Chicago (see chart on
page 16). At the end of 2012, 28 percent of surveyed U.S. hospitals reported that
they participated in an HIE organization, compared to 14 percent in 2008.
Nearly one-quarter of the remaining U.S. hospitals surveyed reported plans to
participate in an HIE organization in the future.
Though the numbers are encouraging, much work is still needed. “We have a
long way to go in terms of market readiness and hospitals’ ability to exchange
information in a secure environment using nationally recognized standards,”
says John Daniels, FACHE, vice president, strategic relations, Healthcare
Information and Management Systems Society.
Creating Value Though Information Exchange
Participating hospitals, however, are seeing the benefits of using HIEs to exchange
clinical information with other organizations. The expected benefits of an HIE,
according to HIMSS, include:
