and we’ve all had to learn that

Give Physicians a Voice
Van Gorder joined Scripps in 1999 as
COO. Shortly after he joined the
organization, Scripps physicians
ousted their CEO and the board
selected Van Gorder, who had been
acting as a diplomat between administration and physicians, to replace him.
Scripps physicians were frustrated
with top-down mandates. To give
physicians more of a voice in the
health system, in 2000 Van Gorder
established the physician Leadership
Cabinet, comprised of elected physician leaders. He quickly discovered
