The remarkable thing about the sprawling Permian Basin, a 102,000-squaremile region stretching across 46 counties of West Texas and four counties in
southeastern New Mexico, is not only that it is the nation's most prolific oilproducing basin, having pumped more than 30 billion barrels of oil equivalent
since the early 1920s, but it also continues to offer an amazing variety of
productive targets.
A perfect example is Irving, Tx.-based Pioneer Natural Resources, the largest
leaseholder in the Permian's Spraberry/Wolfcamp play. Pioneer has 800,000
gross acres in the Midland Basin, the Permian's largest sub-basin.
The company has 7,000 vertical wells on its leasehold, but today is drilling
horizontal wells exclusively, and is approaching 600 horizontals, according to
Executive Vice President Joey Hall. He says Pioneer is targeting the Jo-Mill,
Lower Spraberry, Middle Spraberry, and Wolfcamp A, B and D benches,
primarily in Martin and Midland counties in the heart of the Midland Basin, as
well as some activity to the west in Andrews County, Tx.
With so many horizons to target on its acreage, Hall says Pioneer has identified
20,000 drilling locations. "We have decades of inventory," he marvels.
