A Letter from the President
If we generally mark time by the major events in our life, perhaps in the life of my tenure at
SGIA, I have now passed my first birthday. That is, I experienced my first SGIA Expo as the
president of the Association.
In assessing my experience and really wanting to convey how this felt, I think it boils down to
gratitude and appreciation. I am grateful to a staff who are so experienced and professional
that I had the latitude to experience the show on my terms without the constant distraction
of issues and concerns that could have plagued any newcomer. They did, indeed, acquit
themselves with distinction.
I am also grateful to the exhibitors and suppliers that come to the Expo, who have faith in this
event, and who work hard, even feverishly, to prepare for this vital moment. I wish everyone
could witness the inner workings of what has to take place the weeks before a show begins,
especially the very few days of setup leading to opening day. It is a phenomenal orchestration
of effort on the part of many. These are more than mere foot soldiers for their companies, they
are dedicated professionals who obviously take pride in the excellent experience they hope to
provide to Expo-goers, and on which their companies' fortunes so depend.
This leads me to the gratitude for the many thousands of attendees from all of the various
printing disciplines and markets, from companies of different sizes, at many levels of roles and
responsibilities who create what many feel is the "electric" atmosphere, the "buzz" as it were,
that is so much a part of the character of this Expo. I hope each of you enjoy it as much as I did
when I was an attendee, and will continue to do so.
And, finally, the staff and I appreciate the many sacrifices and hard work involved in any
business venture, old or new, large or small, and we appreciate being able to play a part in so
many enterprises and efforts, not only for this one week, but for the entire year.
If for some reason you were unable to make it this year, don't worry - you can always join me
at my second birthday party in New Orleans next October. Have a great year!
