In this last Journal issue of 2016, it's an excellent time to reflect back
on the state of the industry this year. For me, this year has been one
of constant reflection for the Journal: Are we writing about the correct
topics? Are we answering your questions? Are we illustrating the points
creatively and effectively? And, lastly, what can we do better?
One major contributing factor to these questions is my ability to see the
industry at work. Each year I attend conferences, events and workshops
that will help me put together a magazine our members want (and need)
to pick up and read, and pass along to their coworkers.
This year I had the great opportunity to attend EFI Connect, dscoop,
drupa 2016, the SGIA Expo (of course!), Graph Expo, Pack Expo and a
new, magazine-focused, publication event called Publisher's Conclave
hosted by our printer, Lane Press.
Each of these events were packed with information, excellent speakers,
incredible technology and unparalleled networking opportunities. Many
of the stories you've read throughout 2016 were directly related to what
I saw, heard, experienced or discussed at one of these events. In fact,
many of the authors were those I met during these travels.
As we move into 2017, we will continue to attend industry events to
broaden our scope and inform our readers. We'll make a concerted effort
to bring fresh, accurate and intriguing industry articles to the magazine.
