the numerical value of the pixel in the
Merge mode layer and the one in the
layer below. This results in a much more
natural modification as compared to a flat
adjustment.
There are many Merge mode options,
but in this tutorial I will be using just
four: Overlay, Screen, Normal and Soft
Light. Other common Merge modes are
Multiply, Add, Color Dodge and Hard
Light. Figure 2 shows an example and
description of the Merge modes used in
this tutorial. The image of Mt. Rushmore
is the base layer and the color graphic is the
Merge (top) layer.
Get Started
To begin, open up the image in PhotoPaint. Open Object Manager to see the
object layers. Go to Object > Object
Manager or use the short cut keys,
Ctrl+F7. Next, create seven duplicate layers
(Ctrl+D) from the original Background
layer (Figure 3). By default, all of these
layers are going to be in Normal mode at
100-percent opacity. To turn off a layer
and remove it from view, click on the
"eye" next to the layer (Figure 3). When
changing a Merge mode, click the drop
down menu to view all Merge modes
(Figure 3). To adjust the layer's opacity,
click on the Opacity slider (Figure 2).
Before getting started, unselect all the
"eyes" except the Background layer and
the layer you are going to adjust.
In the first layer (Object 1 above the
Background layer) I'm going to adjust
the color intensity of the image. Click on
the first layer, turn on the "eye" and go
to Adjust > Vibrance. I've moved both
sliders significantly to the positive side
(Figure 4). This layer will stay in the
Normal mode. Don't worry if it looks a
little over saturated. This adjustment can
be modified at any time using the Opacity
slider to soften the effect. The opacity for
this layer at 70 percent. Likewise, every
layer may look a bit odd at face value, but
after changing the layer's Merge mode and
adjusting the opacity, you will find the
correct adjustments as needed. I will be
renaming each layer as I go through these
steps to give clarification to what each
layer is doing. To change the layer name,
double-click on the word "Object" in the
layer and rename it.
In the second layer, I want to sharpen
and highlight more details in the image.
Click on the second layer and turn on the
"eye" to view the layer and go to Effects
> Sharpen > High Pass. I've maxed out
both sliders (Figure 5). Notice that most
