NY FORT STANWIX NATIONAL MONUMENT TRAVEL RESOURCE Fort Stanwix is known as the fort that never surrendered. 48 DESTINATIONS / NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2017 Fort Stanwix National Monument, off I-90 (the New York State Thruway) in downtown Rome, contains a reconstruction of the fort that was originally built in a strategic location here by the British in 1758 for service during the French and Indian War. Later, after American troops captured and rebuilt the fort during the Revolutionary War, the post achieved fame when its garrison successfully withstood a three-week siege by British forces aided by Tories and local tribes in 1777. The withdrawal of the attackers contributed to the subsequent defeat of a larger British army at Saratoga. ■ Fort Stanwix National Monument | www.nps/gov/fost, (315) 338-7730 SHUTTERSTOCK.
