Follow your inclination to visit Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site, west of Altoona, preserves a 19thcentury engineering marvel designed to facilitate the movement of goods and passengers across the Allegheny Mountains, a major obstacle to traffic on the state-owned Main Line canal that was being built during the 1830s. A unique system, the Allegheny Portage Railroad transferred both people and freight from boats to railroad cars that were towed by stationary steam engines up a huge "staircase" of five inclined planes, then lowered back to canal level on five more planes on the opposite side of the Cresson Summit. Despite the ingenuity of the process, it became obsolete within a few years as locomotives grew more powerful and dependable, putting most canals out of business. ■ Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site | www.nps.gov/alpo, (814) 886-6150 NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2017 \ DESTINATIONS 51http://www.WeinbergCenter.org/group-sales http://www.WeinbergCenter.org/group-sales http://www.nps.gov/alpo
