Photo by Lynn Murray and Susan Sirkis. T he UFDC Museum houses a wonderful collection of antique, modern and contemporary dolls. Among the many great items to be found in the museum is a modest collection of the dolls and toys of the Albert Schoenhut Company. The company was founded by Albert Schoenhut who was born in Germany in 1849 and immigrated to Philadelphia when he was 17 years old. Albert came from a long line of doll and toy makers. His father and grandfather made wooden dolls and toys in Germany starting as early as 1796. Albert and his wife, Emilie, began manufacturing toy pianos of their own newly-invented design in 1872.
