The example shown is one of three I have seen in a skating costume tagged "Babs Skating". These costumes have tags reading "Sonja Henie/Madame Alexander/New York, U.S.A." The doll on the left retains her original wrist tag with "Sonja" printed on the cover. blouse. The chartreuse bodice and puffed sleeves contrast nicely with the black-and-white checked skirt and shoulder straps. The sewn-in petticoat is white cotton, as are the separate panties. Her tag reads "Madame/ Alexander/New York U.S.A". Her foil wrist tag reads "Margaret O'Brien." In 1947 Alexander produced "Margaret O'Brien" dolls in hard plastic. A few arrived in an Alexander box of the period with "Babs" stamped on the label. Perhaps these dolls were existing stock which the company dressed as "Babs" after they decided to discontinue the Margaret O'Brien doll. Speaking of skaters, the Sonja Henie doll made a comeback in 1951. By this time, technology had progressed, and this version of Sonja has the stuffed vinyl head used on Alexander's Madeline doll. She has a glued-on synthetic wig and the standard five-piece hard plastic body Alexander was using at the time. The examples shown on this page feature 18 and 21-inch tall dolls, but were also available in a 15-inch tall doll. Other examples have appeared with costumes bearing an embroidered tag reading only "Madame Alexander." 48 WINTER 2019
