and deployed in Canada and the Middle
East, as well as a technology unveiled in
2015, but with new applications for projects in the Permian Basin, as three examples of technical advancements.
In Canada, M-I SWACO deployed its
modified fluid system, SILDRIL K™, a

potassium silicate shale inhibitor. According to the company, SILDRIL K is a
water-soluble potassium silicate liquid
utilizinga new silicate chemistry used for
primary wellbore stabilization that doesn't
require additional salt for added inhibition.
The operator's traditional practice included drilling a surface hole, setting
surface casing using WBMs to comply
with environmental regulations for shallow
groundwater aquifers, and using OBMs
to drill the intermediate hole, Friedheim
recounts. When the operator wanted to
drill three wells with shallower casing at
higher rates of penetration, the company
turned to the SILDRIL K system.
Friedheim reports the wells were drilled
successfully as planned, with the operator
saving an average of $31,236 per well in
fluid costs compared with traditional invert-emulsion systems. He adds that all
three wells were drilled at an average
ROP of 249 feet/hour-a 35 percent increase over wells drilled with invertemulsion-and the three intervals in each
well were drilled in a single run without
the need to trip out to change the bit.
In its first application, an operator in
the Middle East used M-I SWACO's
DRILPLEX Plus™ new-generation mixed
metal oxide system, Friedheim says. "It
provides good inhibition, tight fluid loss,
and enhanced lubricity to provide unique
flow properties for difficult drilling environments known for heavy losses because
of natural and induced fractures. Plans
