Dean, Southland Industries, Lorton Stone, Arban & Carosi and Davey Tree Other Team Members: KBAS, LLC (concept designer) The Pentagon Memorial is designed as a park-like setting on a 1.9-acre parcel of land by the Pentagon’s west face. There are the 184 Memorial Units, one for each of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack. Each consists of a stainless steel bench that cantilevers over a pool of water and has five pieces of granite forming the seating surface. The units are arranged by the victims’ birth years and form age lines. Each bench has a victim’s name inscribed on its end and the position of each bench indicates where the victim was at the time of the attack. A design consistent with civilian sector projects and the placement of government funds into functional or operational requirements were primary owner objectives.
