AssocIATIon upDATe// J. Jacob Williams Assistant Director Los Angeles County Department of Public Works Joining the DBIA-Western Pacif ic Reg ion a nd engaging with the local design-build community of professionals, contractors and other California public agencies, I have considerably broadened my perspective on this subject. I began this design-build journey deeply concerned for Los Angeles County and, with some speed, have been able to demonstrate that design-build is a leap forward in public policy for the delivery of the county’s Capital Program. Patrick Crosby President Crosby Group Having been involved in nu merous desig n-bu ild projects since 1988, I have seen this delivery method grow to be one of the most successful methods known today. Contractors have long recognized the value that design-build brings to the owner and the design team. I would like to help further give a voice to the design team, in particular, the subconsulting members of the team. Peter Kinsley, DBIA Vice President—Water Haskell The Design-Build Institute of America has been and continues to be the thought-leading organization in the education, promotion and advancement of best practices in integrated project delivery. I am proud to have been extended this opportunity to serve on the DBIA board of directors and consider this work of great responsibility. Design-build is a time-proven project-delivery method capable of lowering project costs, shortening schedules, and improving quality through owner, designer and builder collaboration. As a design-build practitioner in the public-sector water market, I look forward to supporting DBIA and advancing this message to community leaders as they make important decisions in how to best procure and execute their capital projects while facing unique environmental and economic challenges. Diana Hoag, DBIA Senior Consultant Xcelsi Group I believe owners don’t often appreciate the control they have i n a de sig n-bu i ld acqu isit ion a nd usually believe quite the opposite. They have a different, but very powerful, type of control when they accomplish design-build done right. During my term on the board, I intend to promote the message that the owner’s actions, beginning with the acquisition strategy, have a tremendous influence over accomplishing results that meet the original project goals. 36 winter//2011 the quarterly publication of the design-build institute of america photo courtesy of Shutterstock
