Though coMMon In Europe, green roofs have only recently been adopted in the United States. It is difficult to provide definitive information on how to build a green roof in the United States given the country’s wide variety of climates and conditions. But authors Edmund Snodgrass and Linda McIntyre have done just that, identifying the questions that need to be posed to successfully integrate a green roof into a building project. With the goal of helping professionals and clients make better decisions, their book, The Green Roof Manual: A Professional Guide to Design, Installation, and Maintenance (Timber Press, 2010), provides information and case studies on all aspects of the green-roof field. Focusing on extensive green roofs vs. the more complex intensive roof gardens, The Green Roof Manual addresses the issues associated with choosing, installing and maintaining a green roof. These projects are increasingly more common, showing up, for example, in the 2011 DBIA Excellence in Design award winner, the Ray and Dagmar Dolby Regeneration Medicine Building at the University of California in San Francisco (see page 22). That building incorporates a 6,000-square-foot green roof in its design. Recently certified as LEED Gold, the building boasts terraced rooftop spaces for scientific collaboration. The benefits of a green roof include stormwater management, energy savings, extended roof life and aesthetics. They can impact the heat-island effect in big cities and provide habitat for wildlife. As more federal and local regulations address water issues and more clients demand green certification, the importance of green roofs will likely increase. Like many other choices in the design-build process, incorporating a green roof into the design of a building adds several layers of decision-making and, as a result, sometimes conflicting priorities. After describing in detail how green roofs are constructed, the authors guide the reader through the questions that he or she should raise at each point in the process: whether to build a green roof, how to select designers and installers, how to choose growing mediums and plants and what costs and maintenance to expect. They explore the structural needs of the building and how deep the planting needs to be, whether to irrigate, and the issues involved in choosing native plant species. Because many decisions are dependent on local climate, much of the advice provided is about what questions to ask and where to find U.S. research results. Full of pictures and examples of buildings with green roofs, The Green Roof Manual provides guidance for those considering adding this eco-friendly amenity to their next design-build project.
