leADershIp reflecTIons// The Year Ahead ThIs pAsT yeAr DBIA has made great progress in increasing owner involvement, expanding owner education and promoting design excellence achieved through design-build. I would like to thank 2011 Chairman Greg Gidez for spearheading the institute’s efforts in these areas. Yet important work remains to be done. I will make expanding our educational outreach to owners in both the public and private sectors a key focus of my year at the helm. Empowering owners to articulate and remain steadfastly committed to their project goals, while trusting design and construction professionals to make those goals a reality, is the most important work DBIA and the design-build community can do. Both owners and design-builders must strive to achieve design excellence. But what is design excellence? Because DBIA represents as broad a constituency as it does project types, the definition of design excellence must reach toward and then extend beyond aesthetics. Excellence in design speaks to our efforts to meet an owner’s functional and operational needs appropriately—ultimately enhancing the owner himself. By providing stateof-the-art design and construction, by succeeding in every discipline and trade, design excellence is the ultimate expression of project success. Fortunately for DBIA, this recognition of the importance of design excellence comes at a time when our core roles as teachers and advocates of “design-build done right” are renewed. Our strategic plan identifies the importance of the following essential values: innovation, creativity, respect, trust and integration. Our profession requires this level of integrity, and our customers demand it. The confluence of values-based leadership and the recognition of design excellence, as defined by and for our customers, is an incredibly powerful catalyst for moving this organization, as well as our single responsibility contracting method, forward. Through my years of association with DBIA, I have noticed that DBIA members and Designated Design-Build Professionals™ are industry leaders, not followers. As such, it is our responsibility to manage our resources effectively, communicate with others clearly and honestly and advocate for the interests of our partners and customers as we do our own. The challenge we face moving forward is to do each of these things better while inspiring those around us—and those that will come after us. It is my honor and pleasure to serve this organization. Over the course of 2012, I hope you will share in the collective commitment to DBIA’s core values and embrace the pursuit of excellence through design-build done right.
