John (Jack) F. Dougherty, DFI founder
and first president, passed away
unexpectedly from natural causes on
Sunday, October 2. In
1 9 7 6 , D o u g h e r t y
founded DFI, organizing
and chairing the steering
committee that started
the organization, and he
served as the first president and on the
Board of Trustees from 1976 to 1996. He
also received the DFI's Distinguished
Service Award in 1997. He was also an
active member of the Pile Driving
Contractors Association starting in 2000.
Dougherty founded DFP Foundation
Products in 1984 after resigning as
executive vice president at Associated
Pile & Fitting. He has served as president
of both Advance Pile Equipment and
Monotube Pile Corporation. He also
helped form the Midlantic Pile Corporation
of York, Pennsylvania. His
contribution to the industry's evolution
has resulted in multiple patents,
including H-pile point designs and the
TaperTube pile, a tapered pile that
carries its load primarily in friction
between the steel surface and the
surrounding soil.
He was predeceased by his wife,
Barbara Campbell Dougherty, and is
survived by his 12 children, 17 grandchildren
and 2 great grandchildren.
Henk de Koning, previous and first
secretary of DFI Europe, passed away on
September 13 after a
long illness. He worked
from 1976 to 2016 for
the Dutch Foundation
Contractors Association
(the NVAF in Dutch) and
its legal predecessors. After his
retirement as secretary, he contributed
to the realization of guidelines and
publications. In 2018 he was appointed
an honorary member of the NVAF
because of his great merit for the
association.
" We will remember and respect him
for the work that he has done during the
first few years of establishing and
developing DFI Europe in his own
special way, " says Sikko Doornbos, cofounder
of DFI Europe. " We wish his
family and beloved ones all the strength
they need to bear this loss. "
Keller announced Paul
Schmall, Ph.D., P.E., has
been named president
of The Moles for the
2022 to 2023 term. He is
v i c e p r e s i d e n t i n
Keller's specialty services business unit,
which focuses largely on tunneling and
dam work. With 35 years in the
geotechnical industry, Schmall has
extensive experience with complex
groundwater control, grouting and
g round f r ee z i ng s o l u t i ons fo r
underground construction as well as
forensic investigation and remediation
of geotechnical " failures " related to
groundwater. Schmall has been a
member of The Moles since 2002,
serving as a member and chair of the
Education Committee from 2009 to 2015.
Recently, he served as the first chair of
The Moles Charitable Fund, which
oversees awarding scholarships to
engineering students.
The National Academy of Construction
(NAC) has elected Seth
Pearlman, the North
Amer i can CEO and
b o a r d d i r e c t o r o f
Menard, as a member
of its class of 2022. He
was formally inducted October 6 during
the NAC Construction Hall of Fame Gala
in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Pearlman joined Menard in 2003 and
is responsible for Menard USA, Menard
Canada, Earth Tech (Florida), Farrell
Design-Build (California) and ConeTec.
He is active in numerous industry
organizations and served as the
president of the DFI from 2006-2008.
Among his awards are the American
Society of Civil Engineers' (ASCE) Henry
L. Michel Award for Industry Advancement
of Research in 2015 and the ASCE
Geo-Institute's Wallace Hayward Baker
Award for achievements in ground
improvement in 2020. Pearlman is a
member of ASCE, The Moles and the
American Concrete Institute, and he
currently serves on the DFI Educational
Trust Board. He earned bachelor's and
master's degrees in civil engineering
from Carnegie Mellon University.

contribution, past recognition by peers
for innovation and being recognized as
" best of the best. "
Equipment Corporation of America
(ECA), distributor of specialty foundation
equipment, has announced that
John Hayes has been named director of
business development and Mike
Roberts assumed the position of
branch manager at ECA Jacksonville,
effective September 1.
Hayes is responsible
for maintaining and
nur tur ing key ECA
accounts and developing
new customers and
markets in the eastern U.S. and Canada.
He will work closely with executives,
branch managers and account managers
to develop new business relationships.
Hayes has spent more than 6 years at
ECA Jacksonville in the roles of regional
sales manager and branch manager. He
has served in the foundation construction
industry for more than 21 years, 15
of which were in business development
and marketing.
Roberts will manage
all aspects of ECA's
Jacksonville branch in
Green Cove Springs,
Florida, including sales,
