Sustainability in DFI
Starting with DFI, it is easy to see that sustainability is part
and parcel of DFI's operations. One of the very successful
parts of DFI is the Educational Trust. Its mission statement is
" to support and encourage students in the fields of studies
related to the deep foundations industry by providing
scholarships and opportunities to meet and work with deep
foundations industry leaders, " which fits in with SDG 4 that
deals with education.
Undoubtedly the largest and most energetic committee
within DFI is the Women in Deep Foundations (WiDF)
Committee, which fits in with SDG 5 dealing with gender
equality. Another successful DFI initiative is the Committee
Project Fund that since 2011 has funded numerous projects
that advance the state of practice and understanding of deep
foundations, which aligns perfectly with SDG 9 dealing with
industry innovation.
There are enough other examples that link DFI with the
SDGs, but these three clearly demonstrate that various SDGs
are deeply interwoven with DFI's objectives and activities.
And for that reason, it only makes sense that among the DFI
Technical Committees there is a Sustainability Committee.
While the committee is very active and involved in
numerous activities, it is obvious that the committee cannot
cover everything it would like to do. The answer is obvious: to
partner with other organizations to further the committee's
activities and objectives, which is in line with yet another
goal (SDG 17 dealing with partnerships). These partnerships
include the cooperation with the Sustainability Committee
of the Geo-Institute and the Sustainability Working Group of
the European Federation of Foundation Contractors (EFFC).
The cooperation with EFFC is focused on developing
practical guides with specific suggestions for ways
companies in our industry can make progress associated
with particular SDGs. The first guide, originally developed by
EFFC on the topic of Carbon Reduction, will be reissued as a
joint DFI-EFFC guide before the end of 2022 and work has
started on two other guides. However, the topic of carbon
reduction offers prime examples why sustainability simply
makes sense for our industry.
Carbon Reduction
During the DFI-EFFC International Conference on Deep
Foundations and Ground Improvement in Berlin earlier this
year, carbon reduction was one of the main conference
themes, but the main area of attention was how to reduce the
carbon footprint of a particular foundation. Obviously, that
can be achieved by using different materials (e.g., replacing
the clinker in the cement by supplementary cementitious
materials, such as ground furnace slag or pulverized fly ash),
but just as easily by reducing the size of the foundation.
