committee to not lose momentum on
current initiatives.
Extending a welcome to new chairs
gives us the opportunity to show our
appreciation for the years of dedication
and hard work put in by our outgoing
chairs from the past year. Please join me
in thanking: Tony Amis, Endurant
Energy; Gregg Batchelder-Adams, P.E.,
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; Giovanni
Bonita, Ph.D., P.E., P.Eng., P.G., GEI
Consultants; Mark Bryant, EIT, Bhate
Geosciences; Rick Ellman, P.E., Mueser
Rut ledge Consul t ing Engineers;
Jonathan Huff, P.E., Goettle; Michael
Kynett, P.E., MBK Engineers and Guney
Olgun, Ph.D., Missouri University of
Science and Technology. Fortunately
for us, while they are stepping back
from leading a committee, this does not
mean they are stepping away from DFI
or the committees they were leading!
President's Awards
Circling back to our Business Meeting
Luncheon, another great part of the
meeting was Mike Wysockey, Ph.D., P.E.,
handing out this year's President's
Awards to an amazing trio of individuals.
Paul Axtell, P.E., D.GE, Dan Brown
and Associates, is a current DFI trustee
and chair of the Drilled Shaft Committee.
After being the first technical
program chair to oversee a DFI virtual
conference (SuperPile '20), Axtell
stepped right back up to serve in the
same capacity when SuperPile '22 was
finally able to happen in person in St.
Louis. In addition to his work with the
Drilled Shaft Committee, he is also the
trustee liaison for the Manufacturers,
Suppliers and Service Providers
Committee. Axtell is a paper reviewer
for our annual conferences, and a
frequent speaker/author at DFI events,
including this year in Berlin at the DFIEFFC
International Conference on Deep
Foundations and Ground Improvement
and at SuperPile '22.
Sebastian Lobo-Guerrero, P.E., Ph.D.,
American Geotechnical & Environmental
Services, is a national and international
ambassador, as well as a social
media influencer for DFI. Seriously DFI's
photographer knows the password to
Lobo-Guerrero's phone from taking so
many pictures of him to post during this
year 's Annual Conference! LoboGuerrero,
like Axtell, recommitted to be
the conference chair this year after the
annual conference planned for 2020 in
National Harbor switched to a virtual
conference. He is also a contributor,
interviewer and interviewee for multiple
series of DFI's podcasts and a
member of the joint ADSC-DFI
Anchored Earth Retention Committee.
Chris Woods, P.E., G.E., D.GE, LEED AP,
BD+C, Densification, was technical
program co-chair for this year's annual
conference. Woods is a regular
contributor, interviewer and interviewee
for multiple DFI podcasts and a
member of the Ground Improvement
and Women in Deep Foundations
Committees. He is also currently serving
as a guest editor for two upcoming
special issues of the DFI Journal focused
on ground improvement.
To wrap up, I will turn the page from
celebrating the accomplishments,
contributions and changes of our
technical committees over the last 12
months to looking at next year. We have
released the Midyear Committee Week
meeting schedule. So, if you are
interested in finding out more about
what DFI's technical committees are up
to, join us the week of April 17, 2023. All
our technical committees will hold
online meetings for existing and
potential members to learn about
innovative projects, current industry
practices and events, and discuss future
