addition of travel lanes, safety
barrier, noise wall or visual barrier or
other elements that add weight to
foundations that is not considered in
the original design. It may be difficult
to assess the impact with respect to
strength and serviceability.
* Current design standards often
include consideration of seismic,
scour and or vessel collision
demands that were not considered
in the original design.
* Proving, by inspection, measurement
or other means, that the inplace
foundations have appropriate
integrity and performance characteristics
for the new project
design tolerances, and design life
requirements.

* While foundation deterioration due
to corrosion, erosion of surrounding
materials or other aging is not
frequently a problem, it is a concern;
the difficulty of assessing
components without visual or
tactile access is an issue.
Despite the potential for a
wide variety of project
benefits, as a current
state of practice in the
U.S.transportation sector,
foundation reuse is
relatively uncommon.
* Adapting existing foundations into a
new design often requires more
complex analysis as well as owner
buy-in for the proposed plans.
Opportunities include:
* Benefits described earlier for
foundation reuse.
* Current design codes allow for
modifications for local and regional
practices and could be further
supplemented to support the reuse of
existing foundations. Agencyspeci
fic geotechnical design
methods and local or regional
modifications to resistance factors
are being used within the framework
of the American Association of State
Highway and Transportat ion
Official 's LRFD Bridge Des ign
Specifications. This provides a
template for developing and adopting
design and construction methods
for the reuse of existing foundations.
Considering the regional nature of
foundation type, design practice,
performance requirements and
foundat ion integri ty threats,
development of local reuse guidance
is practical and more appropriate
than general code language.
* While in-place foundations are
generally constructed by " others, "
they will have typically been inplace
wi th a long history of
acceptable performance.
* High-quality as-built plans and
records about installation, materials,
construction control, inspection, and
foundation locations and dimensions
do exist for some projects. With a
new focus on digital as-built
construction and records management
as part of transportation asset
management, this will gradually
become less of an issue.
* There are also several methods for
assessing unknown foundation
length, and developments in the
geophysical arena are improving
these assessments.
