conditions are reported. These data now
can be uploaded to engineers and authorized
personnel through a simple process. When
the drilling rig manufacturer builds the
next rig, it can use that data and feedback
to build in quality and value that provide
the greatest return on capital invested.
Additionally, drilling automation is
allowing operators to use preventive and
predictive maintenance, and to oversee
operations more easily. Saving five seconds when loading pipe into a well may
not seem impressive by itself, but operators know these savings multiplied by
thousands of pipe changes add to significant time savings. Automation capabilities further pay off in the form of
new levels of reliability, capability, and
serviceability.
Automation in drilling has applications
that extend far beyond monitoring, troubleshooting and diagnostics. The next
generation of drilling rigs will use the
automation backbone to bring unprecedented process control to the oil field.
Feedback from downhole tools combined
with surface sensors will allow operators
to add capabilities that could never be
realized previously. Real-time operational
data now can be used to close the loop
on several drilling process variables with
engineering precision.
This level of process control, when
combined with other technologies such
as remote presence and intelligent data
systems, will allow the site operator to
choose the best course of action over a
wide range of conditions as they occur.
This has great implications for safety and
control at the drill site. Novel drilling
technologies may be used to increase productivity in a safe and controlled manner.
Contractors will be able to use their resources-both equipment and personnel-
to more effectively develop their sites.
The industry is releasing exciting technology products to capitalize on this opportunity already. These systems undoubtedly will bring about the next era
of oil field productivity.

He joined Schramm in 2013 as an
integral member of the engineering
team for the T500XD™, a highly compact rig designed for horizontal and
directional pad drilling with 360-degree walking portability and a full
communications interface. Metzger
has 15 years of experience in industrial
controls, software development, and
machine vision. He holds a B.S. in
computer science and an M.S. in engineering management from Drexel
University in Philadelphia.
