desert, I see the cycle of life and death exposed, "
says Utah artist Cody Chamberlain. " I see a skull
at the base of a thriving juniper, and the first
bloom of a yucca under the specter of a withered pinion pine. The unapologetic exposure of
the life cycle, laid bare, is part of what makes the
adventure of exploring the desert so profound. "
Chamberlain's work, which will be on display in
the show In Sight, Out of Mind at the Springville
Museum of Art (smofa.org), in Springville, Utah,
Jan. 6-Aug. 7, is a tribute to the profound and
inexpressible experiences we have as individuals

in the wild. Going from keen observation in nature to big canvases and a passionate dedication
to layering materials and relinquishing control,
he hopes to capture the sublime aspects of the
outdoors that recreationists sometimes miss. " I
think the show is especially apt for people in Utah
and the surrounding states, where the inhabitants
enjoy the outdoors so much and so often that they
forget to slow down and smell the junipers or pinions, so to speak, " he says.

Chamberlain found this juniper skeleton in the Great
Basin landscape west of Salt Lake City. " The dunes
out here will move and swallow up the junipers-and
then spit them back up maybe 100 years later before
they take them back again, " he says.

" Birds are the symbol of us, our souls, of the whole range
of experience we go through-which is a lot, especially
during a pandemic, " says Chamberlain of this piece in a
series that he created for a friend in Idaho.
