Association of Orthodontists
Professional Advocacy Conference

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO)
held its annual Professional Advocacy Conference
at the Hamilton Hotel in Washington, DC, on February 25-26, 2020. One hundred twenty-two AAO
member doctors, including 46 residents, attended this two-day advocacy event. Fourteen PCSO
members made this mid-winter trip to the east
coast to represent our region. Members attended
175 meetings on Capitol Hill to advocate on behalf
of the AAO to advance our federal political agenda in Washington, DC.
Three main issues were presented by our attendees to members of Congress and staffers during
our visits to Capitol Hill.
Easing the Burden of Student Loan Debt
Student loan debt has become a tremendous
burden nationally and across most graduates
of university and professional schools. A survey
conducted by the AAO in 2018 with 612 participating residents and recent graduates revealed that
orthodontists are graduating with an average

of $428,150 in student loan debt. Seventy-eight
percent of respondents said their student loan debt
affected their plans for practicing. Forty percent of
respondents who were asked whether they would
have still chosen to enter the orthodontic profession if they could do it all over again, given their
current amount of student loan debt, responded
"no" or "not sure."
The Student Loan Refinancing and Recalculation
Act (H.R. 1899) seeks to preserve the in-school
interest subsidy, reduce origination fees (typically 4% of the amount borrowed) and borrowing
rates, provide for federal student loan refinancing, and allow for residency deferments.
The Student Loan Refinancing Act (H.R. 2186)
would allow for borrowers to refinance their student loans when borrowing rates are reduced.
The Student Loan Tax Elimination Act (S 1696)
would eliminate origination fees on all Federal
Direct Loans.
