establishes the anteroposterior goal for the maxillary incisors and the maxilla
more important to the patient than when the
external facial soft tissues are in repose. Both are
important, but an acceptable soft-tissue profile in
repose does not guarantee that the maxillary incisors are well positioned relative to the GALL when
bared. In contrast, well-positioned incisors and
jaws virtually guarantee an attractive soft-tissue
profile appearance.
PT: What terminology is used for jaw classification?

A jaw that is classified red is either too far
forward (AP), too wide (transverse), or too tall
(vertical). In contrast, a jaw classified black is
either too far back, too narrow, or too short. A
number accompanies the color code to indicate
the quantity of the discrepancy in millimeters.
Using this system for the jaws, along with the
ICD for the arches, allows for a patient's condition
to be clearly and concisely communicated. It is
three-dimensional, positionally correct, and separates the dental from the skeletal components of
the condition. The needed treatment, in terms of
the direction and quantity of movement needed
to reach the goal(s), is implicit. There is an entire
chapter dedicated to classification in our new
textbook. We had a lot of fun writing about it
because it gets right to the heart and soul of the
specialty; if you do not have a defensible classification system based on reliable goals, landmarks,
and referents, then you really don't have much.
PT: How do you typically correct Class II's?
WA: As with diagnosis and classification, treatment is always focused on individual arches and
on jaws, not on malocclusions. No matter the
