worst oil and gas industry downturn in a
generation.
Publicity and Advertising Chairman
Bob Williams reports attendance at the
event, held April 9-13 in Tulsa, was
down by only about 30 percent from the
2014 meeting, which he notes was held
while the industry was still riding the
crest of a boom amid $100 oil.
And, according to SPE IOR 2016
General Chairman Mike Wiggins, all
available exhibit space was sold out and
sponsorships were robust.
The biennial conference, sponsored by
the Mid-Continent Section of SPE, is the
world's largest gathering of petroleum
scientists, and oil and gas industry
professionals focused on advancing
knowledge and technology to improve
and enhance oil and gas recovery,
Wiggins observes. Proceeds from the
conference go toward petroleum
engineering scholarships awarded by the
SPE Mid-Continent Section. The MidContinent is SPE's oldest section.
Among the conference highlights
that Williams cites:
* Janeen Judah, 2017 SPE president-elect and only the fourth woman to
be elected SPE president, delivered the
keynote speech.
Judah is the general manager for
Chevron's southern Africa business unit, based in
Houston.
* A plenary
session featured
presentations on
the state of IOR
from the perspecJUDAH
tives of a major
integrated oil and gas company
(Chevron), an independent operator
(Breitburn Energy), and academia (the
University of Texas at Austin).
* IOR Pioneer awards were presented to five veteran innovators: Richard
Hutchins, Schlumberger technical adviser; Sada Joshi, president of Joshi
Technologies; Jenn-Tai Liang, Texas
A&M University professor of petroleum
engineering; Lanny Schoeling, vice
president of engineering and technical
development for Kinder Morgan CO2
Company; and Ali Yousef, IOR/EOR research program leader at Saudi Aramco.
* A record 615 papers were submitted for consideration, of which 167 were
chosen for the technical program, according to Technical Program Chairman
Dane Caldwell. The technical program
entailed 20 sessions in five concurrent
tracks throughout three days (see related
story, page 25). Additionally, a bonus
track incorporating 17 poster presentations was restored to the biennial conference for the first time since 2010.
