Like many compressor manufacturers,
Blackmer produces models tailored to
oil and gas vapor recovery. "When we
first got into this segment of the business,
we would sell a standard machine for the
broader industrial market," Crouch recalls.
"But in the mid-2000s, in response to a
growing number of VRU-related inquiries,
we launched specific lines for the market:
one for natural gas in general, and one
for sour gas."
To maximize the compressors' durability, Crouch says Blackmer uses robust
valves and avoids copper alloys that are
a no-no in general and particularly in
sour gas applications.
"We are constantly looking at new
construction materials to see if they would
make the compressor more durable, and
tweaking the design to make maintenance
as easy as possible," Crouch states. "In
fact, we are testing a few ideas. I do not
know if they will pan out, but I am
excited about their potential."
Safe Controller
Equipment aimed at vapor recovery
applications should be certified for hazardous environments, says Roel Rodriguez,
