New Infrastructure
Several significant pipeline systems
will come on line in the near future to
help reduce the discount for West Virginia
gas, Burd says. He cites projects overseen
by Dominion, EQT Corp., and Energy
Transfer Partners as major contributors
to easing transportation bottlenecks.
The Atlantic Coast Pipeline, funded
by Dominion and Duke Energy, Piedmont
Natural Gas and AGL Resources, is a
600-mile project that will move natural
gas from Harrison County, W.V., to southern North Carolina, Burd says. The
pipeline's diameter will be 42 inches in
West Virginia and Virginia, and 36 inches
in North Carolina, and will move 2.0 billion cubic feet a day.
EQT's Mountain Valley project is a
300-mile-long system that will move 2.0
Bcf/d from northwestern West Virginia
to southern Virginia. Burd says the pipeline
projects to be in service in late 2018.
The Rover Pipeline from Energy Transfer is being built to move more than 3.0
Bcf/d to western and Canadian markets,
Burd describes. The 700-mile-long pipeline
will originate in southeastern Ohio, southwestern Pennsylvania and western West
Virginia and move gas across South Ohio
to an interconnect in Defiance, Oh., before
crossing into Michigan. Burd says most
of the Rover gas will move to western
U.S. markets, with a third allotted to
Michigan and the Dawn Hub in Ontario.
"Not only will these projects take
natural gas out of West Virginia to markets
the state does not currently serve, but they
will pay millions of dollars in taxes and
create thousands of jobs," Burd applauds.
To complement those pipeline projects,
Burd points to processing plant expansion
plans under way by MarkWest Energy
Partners and Williams Ohio Valley Midstream, and Antero Resource Corp.'s $275
million state-of-the-art water treatment
complex in Doddridge County, W.V.., in
the middle of the Marcellus Shale play.
"Antero Resources is going nonstop,"
Burd describes. "It has started constructing
a $275 million state-of-the-art fracture
waste treatment plant in Doddridge County
that will process 60,000 barrels a day of
wastewater. Antero also is putting a landfill
next to that treatment plant to take the
solids that it strips out of the water treatment
facility. One thing is leading to another."
According to the company, the plant
will separate water, salt and radioactive
particles out of the wastewater. Salt that

cannot be sold to municipalities for road
use will be disposed in the landfill, which
is scheduled to open this year.
Burd adds that Antero is close to finishing an 80-mile pipeline to move water
from the Ohio River to its well sites in
Ohio and West Virginia.
Other End-Users
New sources of demand for all that
transported natural gas include three large

ethane cracker projects that are moving
ahead or planned, Burd says, pointing to
Royal Dutch Shell's multibillion dollar
petrochemical complex in western Pennsylvania as the major player.
The company announced in June it
was moving ahead with the facility, which
will use Marcellus and Utica ethane to
make 1.6 million tons a year of ethylene
for the plastics industry. The plant will
be built in Beaver County, 30 miles north-
