ed to, horizontal shale wells, multilateral
pad wells, and liquids-rich gas wells.
Nielsen reports that Hess Corp. used the
new couplings in 10 horizontal wells in
North Dakota, where they significantly reduced the frequency of damage to sucker rod couplings and production tubing. He
says Hess field tested the couplings on the
worst wear sections of tapered rod strings
in 10 of its Bakken wells that were known
to fail frequently because of tubing leaks.
In more than 24 months, Hess and Materion found practically no measured wear
to either the tubing or the couplings in double the previous run times. "Since our tests
with Hess, we have been contacted by 12
oil and gas companies to run trials in their
wells," Nielsen adds.
He says a typical application likely will
not require more than 50 couplings posi-

tioned appropriately at the most severe
wear points.
"These couplings, when applied and
used correctly, will increase annual cash
flow by more than $100,000 for each
well," Nielsen calculates. "The couplings
were designed and applied using lean-manufacturing principles. The field results attest to the success and efficiency that we,
along with Hess, have developed with this
technology."
Resetting Economic Limits
When wells experience production declines, operators have to make changes to
increase production to levels that justify
producing the well, despite its low economic limit. Without doing so, the operator may
have to produce the wells at a loss or breakeven scenario, or even shut the wells in.
