Permian Basin operators continue to utilize a variety of multiwell pad configurations,
lateral lengths and completion techniques in ongoing efforts to maximize production
and boost estimated ultimate recoveries. As independents align their activities with
these core objectives, their operational focus is shifting to optimizing the economic
performance of producing assets as well as getting the most out of high-graded drilling
inventories consisting of the highest-potential prospects in America's most prolific oilproducing basin.
For example, despite a reduction in planned Permian drilling compared with last year,
privately held RKI Exploration and Production LLC is deploying state-of-the-art walking
rigs drilling on multiwell pads to drive operating efficiencies as it targets the Wolfcamp
beneath portions of Eddy County, N.M., and neighboring Loving County, Tx., says Jack
C. Rawdon, vice president of joint operations and procurement.
He says the Oklahoma City-based Independent operator staked its initial Permian
claim when it acquired its Delaware Basin holdings in January 2007. The acquisition
included vertical wells and legacy production, but under RKI's aggressive horizontal
drilling strategy and development programs, Rawdon says, RKI's Permian net
production now accounts for 22,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day out of a companywide
total net of 32,600 boe/d from its combined Rocky Mountain and Permian assets.
