Continuous Pumping
Multistage fracturing can accelerate
return on investment with quick, contin-
uous pumping operations that eliminate
rigging up and down between stages, according to Lutfi. With diesel-fueled pumps,
Continental Controls' gas substitution system (GSS) enables natural gas to substitute
for diesel on traditional diesel engines without any engine modifications. An electronic
pressure regulator sends a command through the controller area network bus to set
pressure to the air inlet downstream of the turbocharger. The GSS monitors diesel fuel
with a flowmeter and augments it with natural gas, based on diesel flow.
fracturing programs must stop to let the
pump engines cool before more fuel is
added. The only option, he observes, is
risky "hot-fueling," in which fuel is added
while the pump is in operation.
With Baker Hughes' bifuel service,
however, Lutfi says continuous operations
stay continuous. The natural gas is delivered to the bifuel pumps through a closed
system that eliminates spills and multiple
refueling operations. He adds that since
less fuel is needed, operators get extended
run times and improved bottom lines.
The largest fracturing project that Baker
Hughes has been involved with, according
to Lutfi, was a 10-well pad for a customer
in the dry gas area of the Marcellus Shale
in Pennsylvania. The entire fracturing operation was powered by Baker Hughes'
bifuel pumps using line gas.
"It depends on what type of service
you have," Lutfi comments, "but we were
able to save our customer $2,400 per
frac stage. Bifuel operations can save
companies up to $3,000 per stage."
