years should open a whole new level of
resolution," he predicts.
Obtaining Better Data
One of the biggest trends on both land
and marine is the move to broadband
sources and receivers, where the goal is to
widen the amplitude spectrum of the data
acquired. "The interest in low frequencies,
in particular, is that they penetrate to
greater depth," Ellis explains. "Another
octave at the lower frequencies, for example,
increases resolution and enables more precise calculation of subsurface rock prop-
erties through seismic inversion."
In unconventional plays, he says broadband data provide more detail to support
decisions on where to place horizontal
wells. "Seismic inversion applied to broadband data allows attribute maps to be
produced that can help identify those
areas that are more rigid and therefore
more likely to fracture," he states.
Another development in data acquisition, Ellis observes, is new, thin, downhole
tools for small diameter wells, which he
says lend themselves nicely to fracture
monitoring.
He says the advantage of this approach
is that the seismic signal does not have
to pass through the weathering layer.
"While seismic signals pass through hard
rock extremely well, they do not travel
well through the near-surface, unconsolidated weathering layer," he stresses.
Because fracturing is the source for
downhole monitoring, the signal completely
avoids the weathering layer. "Vertical
seismic profile surveys provide very-highresolution data, but are limited by the
geometry of the well used for observation,"
notes Ellis. "Combining downhole fracture
monitoring with microseismic and 3-D
surface arrays provides maximum intelligence on the nature of the subsurface."
