The Wattenberg Field has produced
approximately 2.8 trillion cubic feet of
natural gas and has approximately 11,000
producing wells.

With advanced 3-D seismic acquisition
methods, horizontal pad drilling, and
multistage hydraulic fracturing techniques
for both Niobrara and Codell targets,
vast amounts of new oil and gas reserves
are being unlocked within this "mature"
province. In fact, each square mile of the
Niobrara and Codell formations is estimated to contain 80 million barrels of oil
equivalent in place. Given the huge inplace reserves, companies are drilling up
to eight horizontal wells on 160 acres, or
up to 32 horizontal wells per section.
Located in the heart of the Wattenberg
Field, the Greeley sweet spot is defined
largely by thick, well-developed chalk
benches in the Niobrara, higher pressures,
and increased gas-to-oil ratios. Figure 2
shows a Wattenberg well spot map with
Greeley outlined, illustrating the scarcity
of well locations within city limits in
comparison with the surrounding area.
Developing this large and relatively undrilled area in the sweetest part of the
horizontal Niobrara/Codell play was the
reasoning and justification for acquiring
high-resolution 3-D data.
