'Sometimes it is a lot
more verbal than other
times, but you have to get
your point across and let
them know it isn't acceptable and we're not going
to tolerate that here.'

- Union coach Rick Bennett on his
team's lackadaisical practice habits

BIG RED THROWBACK
Cornell  reached back into history for its home opener
against Niagara on Halloween night. The Big Red wore
throwback jerseys that featured the last names of some of the
greats who once wore those colors in Ithaca.
The red commemorative jerseys boasted a wraparound
white band encompassing the school name in red letters on
the front, with the player number(s) in red on the back and
the famous surnames situated above in white letters. The
jerseys were to be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to
a mission and service trip to the Dominican Republic that will
be led by Cornell head coach Mike Schafer.
"It's a unique project, because it gives the players a sense
of upholding tradition by researching all of the previous
players to wear their numbers," said Schafer at cornellbigred.
com. "Plus we'll auction off the jerseys and it will help
perform community service when we return to the Dominican
Republic this summer."
Some of the names from the past that were worn that
evening included Ken Dryden, Joe Nieuwendyk, Douglas Murray, Matt Moulson, Ben Scrivens, David LeNeveu and Andy Iles.
Junior goaltender Mitch Gillam, who scored an empty-net
goal against Niagara in his first career collegiate start/victory
in 2013-14, wore his own name plate on his No. 32 jersey, as
he is the first player in program history to don that particular
pair of digits. The Big Red also completed a sweep of the
visiting Purple Eagles with a 4-0 shutout as Gillam stopped all
19 shots he saw, while junior forward Jeff Kubiak had his first
career two-goal game.

M

any around ECAC Hockey will remember the McNamara family
from Chestnut Hill, Mass. Kevin
and Jack McNamara both played from
Colgate from 2007 to 2012. The younger
brother, Jack, left Colgate after his
sophomore season to play professional
hockey in Denmark. His pro hockey
career also included stops in Slovakia
and Norway.
While playing in Europe, McNamara
started working on a business concept
now known as Food-X, a food-based
accelerator.
"While playing, I noticed guys were
drinking shots that were synthetically
caffeinated, artificially sweetened
and loaded with weeks of vitamins,"
McNamara said. "These guys were
getting the jitters and crashing in the
third period. I thought there had to be
a more suitable solution for athletes."
McNamara created TrueEnergy along
with two other former athletes. The
drink is a green tea caffeinated honeysweetened sports shot infused with

vitamins, electrolytes and antioxidants.
McNamara, 25, is now the CEo of
TrueEnergy, a company that launched
its first presale campaign for the first
product on Nov. 17 through Kickstarter.
"Eventually, there comes a time
when you have to present your product
to the people, and they are going to
love it or hate it," McNamara said. "It is
as simple as that. It is an exciting time,
but also terrifying for fear of disapproval. Despite the fact that we have
received some positive reviews of our
formula from athletes and working
professionals, the nerves still quake.
you want people to enjoy your product
so much that they need it. As entrepreneurs, we all have this deep-seeded belief that we have built a better wheel,
and that we have the greatest product
in the world for our industry, but when
will we feel truly validated?"

IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Mike Doherty, Yale
A native of Reading, Mass., Doherty
helped Yale get off to
a 4-1-1 start with two
goals and two assists
in the first six games.
Doherty, a 2014-15
All-Ivy League selection, left a game early
against RPI on Nov. 14 due to a
lower-body injury.

THE NOTEBOOK
Brown had an opportunity for a muchneeded three-point night taken away due to a
faulty press-box replay system at RPI on Nov.
14. Playing in overtime, Brown sophomore
Max Willman (Barnstable, Mass.) appeared
to score the game-winner with less than 45
seconds remaining in overtime of a 3-3 tie.
Due to the failure of the press-box replay
system, the goal could not be reviewed and
play resumed. The game ended in a tie. To
view the controversial no-goal, visit
www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXB51twtfN
M&feature=youtu.be&t=2m4s/. ...
Cornell freshman Anthony Angello
was the Big Red's first rookie to have points
in his first four collegiate games since Ryan
Moynihan in 1996, while leading the
country in points per game by a freshman. ...
Quinnipiac junior Sam Anas became the
17th player in program history to record 50 career goals with a goal against Harvard Nov. 13,
and the first Bobcat to join the exclusive club
since Kellen Jones in 2014. Anas also was
the first Quinnipiac player to record his 50th
career goal as a junior since David Marshall
during the 2007-08 season. ...
The Union hockey team had an unusual
start to the season, going 3-4-3 in its first 10
games. The season started with much promise
with a victory over then No. 3 Boston University
on the opening weekend. The next nine games
included a tie with Sacred Heart and a poorly
played loss at home to New Hampshire that
triggered a four-game losing streak. ...
Harvard appears to have found two potential goaltenders for the 2015-16 season in
sophomore Merrick Madsen and freshman
Michael Lackey. The goaltending position
was a question mark for Harvard entering the
season after the departure of senior Steve
Michalek (Glastonbury, Conn.).
Madsen, an alumnus of Proctor
Academy in New Hampshire, notched two
shutouts in his first three starts. As a senior
at Proctor Academy, Madsen earned
All-New England honors and was selected
by the Philadelphia Flyers in the sixth
round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
Lackey, who attended Phillips Exeter
Academy, was named ECAC Goalie of the
Week Nov. 10 after going 1-0-1 in two
starts against Yale and Brown. Lackey was
a goalie with the U.S. NTDP for the last two
years before enrolling at Harvard.

THE LIST
David Hallisey, Princeton
The Wethersfield, Conn., native emerged from
Princeton's 1-5-0 start
as the leading scorer
with three assists. The
sophomore forward
played 15 games last
winter before suffering
a season-ending injury.
Before Princeton, he played with the Islanders
Hockey Club in the USPHL.

Jack Barre, Dartmouth
The Fairfield, Conn., native scored a
pair of goals in a 7-3
victory over Brown
Nov. 6. Barre ranked
second on the team
in points and tied for
first in goals (four)
through six games.
Barre appeared in 28 games last year with
10 points.
