Of the 12 New England prep players identified by NHL
Central Scouting as "players to watch" in its prelim 2016
NHL draft rankings, six are defensemen: Peter Christie of
Phillips Exeter, Matt Dillon of Cushing, Adam Karashik
of Avon Old Farms, Brian Matthews of Belmont Hill, Jack
McCool of St. Sebastian's and Mike Young of Rivers.
There are enough other guys worth watching to see
dashes of blueline brilliance almost everywhere you turn.
"Exactly," said Cushing coach Rob Gagnon. "It
should be very exciting."
Start in the Independent School League, where eight
of the 16 teams qualified for New England tournaments
last year, a full one-third of the three postseason fields.
This year, the names on the blue line to watch are Matthews (Belmont Hill), Young (Rivers), McCool and Eric
Jeremiah (St. Seb's), Peter Housakos (St. Mark's) and
Mike Callahan (Roxbury Latin).

Outside the ISL, coaches and scouts are raving about
guys like Reilly Walsh (Proctor), Luke McInnis and
Jack Rathbone (Dexter), Karashik and Ben Mirageas
(Avon Old Farms), Dillon (Cushing), Ben Finkelstein
(Kimball Union) and Christie and Trevor Cosgrove
(Phillips Exeter).
The roads players have taken to this point are varied. Many took lumps as freshmen or sophomores before starring. Others flew under the radar playing on
teams that didn't merit attention. Some changed positions on the fly.
But as the 2015-16 season dawns, each has put himself in a position to play Division 1 college hockey and
possibly more. We'll take a look at three of their stories,
and look forward to the collective excitement the group
will provide this winter.
