Meagher retiring at Bowdoin
Longtime Bowdoin College coach Terry
Meagher announced recently that he will step
down as head coach following the 2015-16 season.
The head coach of the team since 1983, Meagher will begin his 33rd season this winter.
During his tenure in Brunswick, Maine, he has
accumulated a record of 529-245-54 (.671), ranking sixth in Division 3 history in total victories.
Meagher and his predecessor, close friend
and mentor Sidney Watson, combined to give
the Polar Bears just two coaches in the past 56
years, accounting for 855 wins dating back to
1959. Bowdoin is the only college in NCAA ice
hockey history with two 300-win coaches exclusive to its program.
The duo is also responsible for inspiring a
coaching tree that launched dozens of former
Polar Bears to careers on the bench and in the

University standout Angela Ruggiero, a four-time
Olympic
medalist, was inducted into the
Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto last month.
Ruggiero was part of a
seven-member class that included former NHL stars Phil
Housley, Bill Hay, Nicklas
Lidstrom, Sergei Fedorov
and Chris Pronger; and Peter Karmanos, the owner
and CEO of the Carolina Hurricanes.
Ruggiero, a defenseman,
was a dominating force on
the blue line throughout her
15-plus-year career with the U.S. women's national team. She played more games (256) in a
Team USA uniform than any other ice hockey
player in the country's history.
Ruggiero helped the U.S. claim the first-ever
gold medal awarded in women's ice hockey in the
Winter Olympics in Nagano 1998 as the youngest member of the team, and went on to win three
other Olympic medals (silver in 2002 and 2010;
bronze in 2006). She was named the top defenseman in the Olympics in both 2002 and 2006.
Ruggiero competed at 10 IIHF Women's
World Championships and was honored as the
tournament's top defenseman four times. She
also was part of gold medal-winning teams at
the World Championship in 2005, '08, '09 and
'11, and helped the U.S. capture silver medals in
1997, '99, 2000, '01, '04 and '07.
She accumulated 208 points (67-141) during
her time in a Team USA sweater. In 2003 and
2004, she was named USA Hockey's Bob Allen
Women's Player of the Year.

NESCAC tournament in every year of its existence, winning back-to-back titles in 2013 and '14.

Four picked for World Junior A Challenge
Four local players have been selected by
USA Hockey to compete in the 2015 World Junior A Challenge from Dec. 13-19 in Cobourg
and Whitby, Ont. The U.S. has won six of the
past seven tournaments (2008-10, 2012-14).
The initial group of 20 includes 13 forwards,
six defensemen and one goaltender. An additional defenseman and goaltender will be added in the near future.
Defensemen John Marino (North Easton,
Mass.) and Spenser Young (Brentwood, N.H.),
and forwards Callahan Burke (Boxboro, Mass.)
and Liam Pecoraro (Canton, Mass.) were the
New England players selected.

Ice chips
Actor Joe Cure, who portrayed U.S. Olympic hero Mike Ramsey in the movie "Miracle,"
died from injuries suffered in a car accident in
Montana last month. He was 31. Cure was about
to begin his college hockey career at Gustavus Adolphus College when he heard about a
movie tryout for experienced hockey players.
He eventually won a part playing Ramsey in
"Miracle," which chronicled the journey of the
gold medal-winning 1980 U.S. Olympic team
and their coach, the late Herb Brooks. ...
The International Paralympic Committee
named the 2014 U.S. Paralympic sled hockey
team the winner of "Best Team Award" at the
2015 Paralympic Sport Awards last month. The
U.S. team, which featured defenseman Taylor
Chace (Hampton Falls, N.H.), became the first
nation to win back-to-back Paralympic gold
medals in sled hockey by defeating Russia, 1-0,
in the gold-medal game on March 15, 2014.
