UNdERdOg TALES
St. John's Prep players celebrate their
2015 Massachusetts Super 8 crown.

T
he underdog story is one
that has been told for generations, in numerous forms
and fashion and mostly to
the delight of those who are
lucky enough to watch it unfold.
Everyone loves a good underdog
story, and in the world of high school
hockey, that hat fits the head of teams in
all shapes and sizes.
To be an underdog is to be thought to
not have a chance, be it in a moment, a
game or a season, and there are many examples of those who persevere through
the adversity, because their love for the
game runs deeper than any fear and because there is always a moment to relish
and gain from, regardless of the final
outcome.
As we enter a new high school season
across the region, those roles are yet to
be filled, but there are many teams in
New England ready to step up to the
challenge.
Not the size of the dog
The girls of Brunswick might never
be considered a powerhouse team, but
they found a moment that lit a spark and
46 NEw ENGLAND HOCKEY JOURNAL December 2015
redefined their season last year.
In Maine, just five schools have accounted for the seven girls titles since they
started handing out the hardware in 2009.

The us-against-them mentality that helped
bond St. John's prep, Brunswick and
Smithfield last season can teach valuable
lessons to teams across the region
Brunswick, a team that finished 3-15
last year, has never worn the crown that
has been shared by many of the same
big schools that tend to appear in the record books under boys titles.
Last year was no exception, but on
Dec. 16, the underdog Dragons found
themselves embroiled in a battle with
the Edward Little/Leavitt/Poland Red
Hornets, a team that would finish the
year 15-2-1 and an overtime loss shy of a
conference championship.
An early 2-0 deficit had Brunswick
on its heels, but with a little less than 10
minutes remaining in the game, Colleen
McKearney pulled the unlikely Dragons
within one.
Hanging tough against a powerhouse
program late in the game gave Brunswick, "that kind of nothing-to-lose attitude late in the game. The girls just felt
like they were invincible," said coach
A.J. Kavanaugh. "It gave them a sense
of, 'Wait a minute, we can compete with
these guys.' That feeling, late in a close
game with a team like that, is really the
