Community Corner
Community Corner highlights the efforts of ITE
members to improve the daily lives of people in
their community beyond transportation. We
know that many of you spend countless hours
helping with charitable organizations that provide a variety of services such as literacy, hot
meals, clothing, and so much more.

Students Learn about CAVs
through WDCSITE STEM Activity
Volunteers from the ITE Washington, DC Section (WDCSITE) jointly organized activities
with The NEXT Education in October 2019
to demonstrate to students how connected
and automated vehicles (CAVs) work. This
demonstration was one of several organized
as part of the MAKER Day at the Universities Space Research Association, Columbia,
MD, USA, an official event organized by the

Maryland STEM Festival. Students tested CAV
sensors on miniature model autonomous
vehicles for object detection and reaction
(stopping), tried their skills at Python programming code to change their settings, and
laid out strips of color material on the floor
to test vehicle object tracking for movement
(such as real-life CAVs following pavement
markings for lane keeping). itej
