GHSA and IIHS Announce Funding for
Speed Pilot Projects
The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have announced funding
for a speed pilot program to reduce serious injuries and fatalities
on U.S. roads. GHSA and IIHS are partnering with the National
Road Safety Foundation to award one or more grants for developing and implementing a speed-management pilot program. "State
agencies will be eligible to compete for the grant by proposing an
interdisciplinary, community-based program that combines proven
and innovative countermeasures from the areas of engineering,
high-visibility enforcement, communications, advocacy, and policy,"
according to the official IIHS press release.

AASHTO Elects New President and Vice President
The board of directors of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials
(AASHTO) has elected Missouri Department of
Transportation Director Patrick McKenna to serve
as its 2019-2020 president. The board also elected
New Hampshire DOT Commissioner Victoria
Sheehan as the organization's vice president, only
the second woman in the association's 105-year history to serve in that

capacity. "Transportation technologies-such as drones, smart cars,
and autonomous vehicles-are evolving fast and our member
departments of transportation are playing a critical role in the
development of those life-changing innovations," McKenna said.
"Success will depend on a strong state and federal partnership that
includes the creation of sensible transportation policies plus robust
federal funding that allows states to maintain the highways and bridges
of today as we design the transportation infrastructure of tomorrow."
Prior to today's election, McKenna served as AASHTO's 2018-2019
vice president. As president, he plans to emphasize the need for surface
transportation reauthorization and to highlight transportation safety.

LADOT's Murray Awarded International Honor
The International Association of Transportation Regulators (IATR)
selected the Los Angeles Department of Transportation's For-Hire
Transportation Administrator Jarvis Murray as the International Regulator of the Year. The industry award highlights Murray's dedication
to excellence and exemplary public service in for-hire ground transportation regulation and government administration. The industry
honor comes from a growing peer group of taxi, limousine, and forhire transportation regulators, dedicated to improving the practice of
licensing, enforcement, and administration of for-hire transportation
through the sharing of information and resources. itej
