Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills
(QTLS) status: This is a good thing to
have for career development as it shows
your skills and knowledge have reached
a certain professional level. It is
equivalent to QTS (qualified teacher
status), which school teachers at both
primary and secondary levels also hold.
You can apply for QTLS once you've
completed a Level 5 qualification in
education and training. You'll also
need to have Level 2 or higher
literacy and numeracy qualifications,
and be a member of the Society for
Education and Training (find out
more at set.et-foundation.co.uk).

As an FE teacher, you may also work in the prison service or at youth offender institutions,
where courses can help prepare offenders for their transition to release.
'Teaching in prison can be extremely rewarding,' says the Education and Training
Foundation. 'As a teacher, you will assist prison learners in gaining new skills and
qualifications. Many of your learners will be achieving their first qualifications and
becoming positively engaged with learning.
'Developing opportunities for personal development and improving employment
opportunities, you will be supporting your learners to access learning that can help
transform their lives and make a difference to their success and lives 'on the out'.
