The uniform diameter of the continuous rod (right) helps ensure a steady curvature that
matches the turns of the wellbore, which also distributes contact loads and bending
stresses more evenly than with a conventional sucker rod string (left).
Horizontal Deployment
Continuous sucker rod lift systems have
been used in conventional oil and gas
wells for nearly six decades, establishing
a track record of reliably boosting production with minimal downtime in the
process. In fact, systems have been deployed
in tens of thousands of wells in the United
States, Latin America and Canada.
However, the technology has started
being deployed in horizontal unconventional shale wells only recently, thanks
in part to its successful decades-long deployment history and successes in highly
deviated wells. While these are not true
horizontal wells, some of them have inclinations approaching a true lateral.
Applications in tight oil and shale
plays in areas such as the Permian Basin
in West Texas are building on previous
successful installations in horizontal and
directional wells in other regions. For
example, an operator of an onshore oil
field in Latin America was looking for
an alternative artificial lift solution for
his highly deviated wells (inclinations
up to 80 degrees in some cases) with
high gas-to-liquid ratios, limited available
