professor and interim director of the
Integrated Ocean Drilling Program at
Texas A&M University, chief executive
officer at Joint Oceanographic
Institutions, consulting professor at
Stanford University, and associate chief
geologist at the U.S. Geological Survey,

Gas Storage Levels
Increase By 399 Bcf
WASHINGTON-Underground
natural gas storage in the United States

stood at 1.380 trillion cubic feet on May
23, 40.1 percent below the five-year
average, according to the U.S. Energy
Information Administration. That was
up 399 billion cubic feet from the 981
Bcf reported by EIA on April 25, which
was 50.1 percent below the five-year
average. The May 23 storage number
was 748 Bcf less than a year ago, when
storage stood at 2.128 Tcf.
EIA reports gas storage in the
producing region stood at 544 Bcf on
May 23, 40.7 percent below the fiveyear average, but 116 Bcf more than the
428 Bcf reported in storage on April 25,
which was 48.1 percent below the fiveyear average. The May 23 storage
number for the producing region was
down 304 Bcf from a year ago.
In the eastern region, EIA reports,
gas storage on May 23 was 586 Bcf,
42.8 percent below the five-year
average and up 224 Bcf from the 362
Bcf reported in storage on April 25,
which was 56.3 percent below the fiveyear average. The May 23 storage
number for the eastern region was down

316 Bcf, compared with a year earlier.
In the western region, EIA reports,
storage levels on May 23 were 250 Bcf,
30.6 percent below the five-year average
and up 59 Bcf from the 191 Bcf reported
on April 25, which was 39.0 percent
below the five-year average. The May 23
storage number in the western region
was down 128 Bcf from a year ago. r

U.S. Crude Production
Stays Above 8 MMbbl/d
WASHINGTON-U.S. crude oil
production remained above 8.0 million
barrels a day for the fourth consecutive
month in April, according to the
American Petroleum Institute's Monthly
Statistical Report.
At nearly 8.3 MMbbl/d, API reports
domestic oil production increased by
12.6 percent from April 2013 and was
up 2.2 percent from March 2014. This
was the highest output for the month of
April since 1988, API mentions. Year to
date, domestic crude oil production rose
