Tech Trends 2015 Project Optimizes Completion Design Comprehensive analysis of diļ¬erent completion parameters determines key elements of an 'optimized design' and helps Pioneer Natural Resources improve completion performance in an Eagle Ford development program. By Omkar Jaripatke, Orkhan Samandarli, Beth McDonald and Perry Richmond IRVING, TX.-Advancements in drilling and completion technology, combined with an improved understanding of the geology, geochemistry, petrophysical and geomechanical properties of shale reservoirs, are helping operators optimize shale play development to increase well performance and estimated ultimate recoveries. The success of any unconventional development depends heavily on the effectiveness of the completion design. Developing an optimized completion plan by testing different completion parameters in a variety of geological regions within an asset is a challenge for asset teams. Rigorous reservoir modeling and economic analysis are needed to determine a particular completion parameter's effect on well performance and economics. Changing a particular parameter may result in better performance, but the net incremental cost associated with that change may not be the best decision from an economic perspective. JANUARY 2015 117
